Basically irrational fear is the reason behind the ban. The ban makes no sense since items are scanned in the same manner in your carry-on luggage or in your checked luggage. Plus lets be honest you could put enough explosives in an ipad or large cell phone, place it on a window, and that would be enough to take down an aircraft. But we don't ban them do we? No. We saw the same irrational fear with the shoe and underwear bombers before. So we took our shoes off and our belts, but there was never any real reason to do so except fear. Plus you can easily hack via a cell phone or ipad, so a laptop ban just doesn't make sense.
The whole hacking in to the aircraft computer systems has an easy solutions. Air-gap the systems. Basically place critical systems on a separate physical system so you can never access them via the public wifi. Simple solution solved and we get to keep our laptops.
Also next time you go fly take a look around you as you wait in line to go through TSA. That mass of people is a better target than any plane. You are before security, there are more people, you would instill even more fear than a plane going down. But we as a public don't address this issue at all. The Government does think about this but it is not widely discussed. maybe it is time we did.

The 9/11 terrorists were on domestic flights. I know this will aggravate our citizens, especially that 2-3 time frame to board. However, there must be a reason those bans internationally are being conducted. I would us rather be safe than sorry.
