As I learned more abut Vietnam growing up- I never went to a movie with her in it. Her apology later was flip and disrespectful...flat out turd.

I cannot ever watch again "The Deer Hunter as it is far to realistic in its portrayal of Vietnam.

I was in the Ohio National Guard when Kent State Happened, and that and the Teamsters Strike, and several other riots - and that combination put me on Active Duty for good the last day of August in 1970. One of my best friends wives went to Kent State...and she was very leery of me since she knew I was in the Army, but not in the National Guard.
Not a good time in our History.

SGT Kevin Hughes, I was at Camp Mackall for SF Phase 1 when the shootings occurred. The instructors told us something happened, but not what, and training continued.
We didn’t find out what actually happened at Kent State until we returned to Fort Bragg toward the end of May.

I have to make a point here. I was in the Armory for all of this. Since I hadn't been to Basic yet (I was still in High School) I wasn't allowed to go to the "Field." I went to school, then straight to the Armory. Slept on a cot in the Vehicle repair shop/gym. Monitored the radio. When the weekend came, I stayed in the Armory all weekend. And man, we were on "Active Duty" a lot that year.

I went on Active Duty after almost exactly a year in the Guard...and partly my reasoning was I didn't join the Army to point weapons at Americans.

LTC Stephen C. - I was in the Armory in Lakewood Ohio, when the call came in over the Radio. Our Unit was patrolling the overpasses because of the Teamsters strike - and they were taking pot shots at truckers. When the CO came in from Patrol, I told him what they said over the Radio. He threw his helmet in a straight line more than 50 feet across the maintenance bay, and it bounced off the opposite wall.

And the only reason I joined the Guard was to be near my (then) fiancee. I was going to be the Supply Clerk when I got back from Basic. Instead, I went to Active Duty in August of 1970.

SGT Kevin Hughes - Oh Crap, the memories are coming back now...it wasn't just Teamsters and College Riots...if I remember correctly the Guard got called out in April of 1970 for High School Race Riots in East Cleveland too. Sheesh. Everyone was upset it seems.
