People say "Happy Holidays" in December because there's more than Christmas going on in December. On Dec 25 go ahead say Merry Christmas until you're blue in the face. No one f* cares.
Also fun fact - the only time that Christmas was ever banned in America - at any point - was by Christians. No you can't say "ThAt WaS tHe ColOny" It's still American history...
"All Christmas activities, including dancing, seasonal plays, games, singing carols, cheerful celebration and especially drinking were banned by the Puritan-dominated Parliament of England in 1644, with the Puritans of New England following suit. Christmas was outlawed in Boston, and the Plymouth colony made celebrating Christmas a criminal offense, according to "Once Upon a Gospel" (Twenty-Third Publications, 2008).
Christmas trees and decorations were considered to be unholy pagan rituals, and the Puritans also banned traditional Christmas foods such as mince pies and pudding. Puritan laws required that stores and businesses remain open all day on Christmas, and town criers walked through the streets on Christmas Eve calling out "No Christmas, no Christmas!"
In England, the ban on the holiday was lifted in 1660, when Charles II took over the throne. However, the Puritan presence remained in New England and Christmas did not become a legal holiday there until 1856. Even then, some schools continued to hold classes on December 25 until 1870." -- Though the ban was lifted in 1681 by English appointed governor Edmond Andros but it wasn't until mid 19th century it was "fashionable" to celebrate Christmas in that region.

Maj John Bell - What are you even talking about? I didn't watch the video. My original post was in response to seeing "Just say merry Christmas" on what you can see as the thumbnail for this video. To show that the only people who have ever banned Christmas in this country are Christians. So why tf are you going on about race to that post?
Then I replied to the OP about the Mayor having this party - which has been held for TEN years and she's been mayor since 2021...so where was this "outrage" for the years prior to this? Clearly everyone knew about it - it's one of dozens of events held there. So yes it's ok for her to host the SAME PARTY that's been held by OTHER MAYORS for TEN YEARS. (I can't bold so all caps). It's 100% ok to do so - and I addressed this above so go see that comment. I'm not repeating myself. A quick Google search and I found out that information.
HAVE A DAY!!!! :D

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff - Perhaps you should do a bit of research before you respond.
There have been two non-white mayors of Boston. The first is an African American Woman, Kim Janey. Mayor Janey was the "acting" mayor for eight months, appointed after her predecessor, Marty Malsh left office to become US Secretary of Labor. Mayor Janey was not mayor during the Christmas party season. The second non-white mayor of Boston is the current mayor, Michele Wu.
If this party has been held for 10 years and hosted by the mayor of Boston, It has either been hosted by whites who attended, thus making the party NOT segregated. Or white mayors did not attend parties they hosted.
Your statement "...the SAME PARTY that's been held by OTHER MAYORS for TEN YEARS." is patently false. It has not been held by other mayors with a segregated invitation list for 10 years.
Where's the outrage for previous years?
1) I don't need you mansplaining for me. I'm not outraged. I think Mayor Wu's part in this was poorly thought out. She should be embarrassed.
2) It appears that this came to light purely by mistake. If Mayor Wu hosted similarly segregated parties in 2021 and 2022, I didn't know.
3) This is the first I've heard of such a thing in recent times, in ANY city, hence no prior thoughts on the issue. Had I been aware of such a practice since I became politically aware, I'd have called it out then too, regardless of which way the pie was sliced. I cannot fathom why a minority elected official would walk back TOWARD segregation.
Since you skipped over it, I'll ask again. Is it OK for a white American mayor to hold a party for elected officials of the city's government are the invitation list, unless they aren't white? My answer is no. What's yours?
I don't have a problem with "elected people of color" forming their own caucus to meet and discuss common issues of governance. It is no different than the Congressional Black Caucus. But to meet for a purely social occasion, and exclude people based on race, is at best "tone deafness."
_Did spouses and "plus ones" attend.
_If those spouses and "plus ones" did not meet the color filter, were they to be left home?
_If not, what is the basis for excluding white elected officials?
_Did the officials staff receive invitations? All of the staff? or just the ones that passed the color filter?
_If no city funds were used for the mayor's exclusive party, who paid for the kitchen staff, waitstaff and cleanup crew? For use of the city owned property? For the food, beverages and decor?
_Are the elected officials abusing their power by hosting private parties in government facilities that are not similarly available to the public-at-large?
Are the mayor's opponents going to make political hay out of this? You bet they are? So, why would the mayor shoot herself in the foot? Not very savvy.

Maj John Bell Mansplaining???? Lol I'm not a man. So...wtf? Also mansplaining is when men talk over women and explain things to them they already know.
Im not even going through the rest. It's been held before her. No one cared. Have a night.

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff - I know you're not a man, but you've most certainly adopted a toxic masculine persona on RP.
Would it be OK for an elected whites Christmas party, beat a hasty retreat? You can't answer in an intellectually honest manner so beat a hasty retreat.

There are lots of white, black, yellow, red, tan, etc. people that I haven't invited to Christmas parties in my lifetime. Reasons have been based on many factors, but none that you seem to want to suggest.

Joseph and Charlie - This is a party that's been held for TEN years. She's been mayor since 2021...so why wasn't this an issue before? They hold dozens of events around the holidays for a variety of groups and where all are invited to many. So why does ONE event that is for people of color bother you or anyone else? It's weird.

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff When I was stationed in New Hampshire in the 70s and 80s the Boston "Irish Only" Christmas party would frequently make the local tv news for some very un-Christmas like reasons.

@Russell - the only people "freaking out" are conservatives it seems. And white conservatives at that. I'm not sure what "liberals" has to do with anything about that mayor and the party which is what the op was about and then apparently sprinkled in with the faux "war" on Christmas (which again the only group to ever ban it in this country or land were Christians). People like you need to seriously get over yourselves.

When I wish someone a "Merry Christmas," I don't ask their religion. And I'm not forcing my beliefs upon them. I am INCLUDING them in the social warmth of my culture. And I welcome any reciprocal offers from them during times that are special to them.
But if they are the types that get butt sore because I haven't completed a dossier about every little innocuous detail that may offend them, when no offense is intended, they deserve the self-inflicted irritation.
Should I extend a "Happy Kwanza," "Happy Hannukah," "Kul 'am wa enta bi-khair" someone would jump my ass for cultural misappropriation, but my guess is they wouldn't be a republican. Democrats seem to have assumed the mantle of thin air outrage.
What the puritans did hundreds of years ago is irrelevant. The Romans used to kill Christians in the arena, what hypocrites that so many of them are Catholics today. Yes, that is how silly your "puritans" analogy is.
