We need to create two tracks in secondary schools (most countries don't even offer free schooling (9-12th) We should not be preparing everyone for college. We should offer a "Tech" track, IT, Medical, Aviation, Construction, etc... for all public school students. We have some of that now but need to expand. I like what he says about the loss of time. This is opportunity loss that no one considers when they go off to college and four years becomes five or six then graduate with no job and an enormous load of student debt. Give me a good welder or electrician with a high school education. I would take that over most of these dumb engineers we are ending up with.

The American model should be K-12 and then mandatory 2 years of active duty military before any college is allowed to admit them for a four-year degree, but to move on to graduate school, it required another 2-year stint. Also, no 2 years of active duty service, equals no drivers license.

Kevin O'Leary from Shark Tank has both an undergraduate degree and an MBA. He credits school because it is not only about what you learn, but who you can connect with

Kevin O'Leary: Here's how much an MBA matters in business
"The great thing about an MBA is not the technical skills you've learned.... I forgot all of those — it was the people I met in my class," says "Shark Tank" star O'Leary.

Book smart doesn’t necessarily transfer to things like emotional intelligence, skill level, or even common sense.
I agree. We need to erase the stigma that a degree is worth anything more than the paper it’s printed on.

Harvard Business Review would disagree. Mastery of these traits are necessary for anyone working with others in a professional capacity

1) show me a study published in a refereed journal.
2) i'm a computer scientist, most of the folks i have worked with have an inter-personal relationship score of ZERO. but they are brilliant Software/Systems Engineers.
so who do you want designing your software? the guy who works 70 hour weeks and lives off Jolt Cola and cold pizza, or the guy who can't figure out which bathroom to use & still wets his bed?

https://hbr.org/2017/02/emotional-intelligence-has-12-elements-which-do-you-need-to-work-on is the link to the article discussed. I think you might get a few free article views or it may only be for subscribers.
By “refereed journal” are you referring to peer-reviewed and scholarly or something else?
Luckily for both of us I’m working on my second research degree so I’m sure I could find plenty of articles, case analyses, and experiments published within the past 5 years and in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals to put us both to sleep.
Emotional intelligence isn’t quite an interpersonal relationship score but you are more than welcome to disagree with the research. I’m not offended, I didn’t author any of it.
