I think the message has been twisted by the Times. The SMA was really making the point that increasing your GT score can simply provide more re-class options for soldiers that may want to do so to remain the in military.

SGM (Join to see), I see the GT score as one more "discriminator" or way to separate people and - apparently, according to the article - as one factor in deciding who stays and who goes during a drawdown.

It may be overrated, but it's a way to do just that. I know when I came in many years ago, I did well on the test and my GT score was a good one; the recruiters said I could select any MOS I wanted, so it has been in use along those lines for many years (four decades that I know of).

The article isnt saying that the GT is being used as a retention factor from the way i read it. It is saying that you are hurting yourself by not having a 110 GT because alot of priority MOS need that line score.

The course is free and it's a great opportunity for someone that need a higher score to take this class now before it's going to be to late

Because of my GT score, I was not allowed to retest. I took it after being out of the military for 16 years and wasn't able to study at all. I wanted to retake it at one point because I wanted to see if I could get an even higher score (not trying to sound like a jerk or anything). I did not vote you down, but I don't think everyone should have to retest. If you do not have a 110 or higher, you should definitely go through the course and improve your score.

At this time of the Army needing to get rid of so many Soldiers, the GT score is another discriminator, just like the APFT, ABCP standards, etc. What I get from the article, is that if your GT is less than 110, you are setting yourself up for failure, and that you should increase it so your chances of staying in service are better.
