Working to support ISIL and ISIS? Nope. That is the Sunni side of life - and it is the militias of the Shia that the Iranians have armed and worked with.... not IS or AQ. Iran exceed US influence in Iraq by 2012 - and they are the key player --- not the US -- in Iraq today. IRGC has the fight west of the river in Mosul...

Iran supports ISIS through it's funding and support of Hamas. In 2012, the United States Treasury Department exposed the extensive financial ties between Iran and al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), the terrorist organization that evolved into ISIS. The generous support Iran afforded ISIS in its formative years was part of a broader alliance that the Islamic Republic established with al-Qaeda over a decade ago.

And what was that moment in time - the Blue Mosque perhaps - when all cards were off the table. Understand that for IS (they are global) - the Shia is the primary enemy - not the US or the West. I was not aware on the DoT paper on Iran - AQI links - but Iran was willing to fund anyone out to fight the US.... and so that is a good point you made. However... IS is not AQI anymore - and it was against Shia that ISIS came to gain land power.... and Iran surely did not intend to help them resupply last month with the stores lost in the IS offensive in Palmyra.
