On September 8, 1900, over 6,000 people were killed when a hurricane and storm surge struck Galveston, Texas. An excerpt from the article:
"The deadliest natural disaster in American history remains the 1900 hurricane in the island city of Galveston, Texas. On September 8, a category four hurricane descended on the town, destroying more than 3,600 buildings with winds surpassing 135 miles per hour.
Estimates of the death toll range from 6,000 to 12,000, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. Tragically, the magnitude of the disaster could’ve been lessened if the U.S. Weather Bureau hadn’t implemented such poor communication policies."

SGT David Reynolds: Sitting near my fireplace there is a hand carved rocking chair that belonged to my great-grandmother. It was the only piece of furniture they had left after their house in Brownsville was destroyed by the tides and winds from the Galveston hurricane. Nine years later, a Cat 2 hurricane hit Brownsville. They lived further inland by then but were still flooded. That time the rocking chair floated up to the second floor. Over the years it has been reupholstered, but it's still very strong and I love to sit in it and read.

SGT (Join to see) - I think so too. When I was a kid and we visited my paternal grandfather, I would sit in that chair in his little library and read most of the day while the adults yakked away. Book shelves from floor to almost the ceiling...it was my little piece of heaven in that house.

Guess they've learned a lot of lessons since then because we get nothing but communications about tropical systems, hurricanes or otherwise, these days.
