SSgt (Join to see) I saw a video mock up of hypersonic combat. It involved using lasers to super heat the opposing aircraft, and causing it to break apart in mid air. It was applied to hypersonic, upper atmosphere, and exoatmospheric (yep space fighters with lasers) combat. The lasers beam of course is outside the visible spectrum, but the beam would be focused on the enemy craft, then any maneuvering the beam would track the craft. At those speeds and altitudes, the ability to maneuver is limited, giving the laser the ability to track the craft.
Of course at this point in time it is all supposition, and theory.
