I think riding a bike or just running on your own two legs is both safer and better for both horse and rider. But then again all the women I have known in my life who like riding horses would disagree. And I don’t live out west nor am I native American where the entire culture is based around the horse. So they would probably probably make me walk.

I have been around horses most of my life. When we came back from Alaska my kids were 8 and 5. I bought 4 good horses and they learned to ride very well. We lived off base (Ft Lewis) but could ride the tank trails on base if no field maneuvers were going one. We often packed a lunch and rode most of the day. My kids got very proficient at riding.
Now, regarding equestrian sports, I fully support protective head gear. Just look at our Rodeo competitors.
An old adage:
The best thing for the inside of a man is the outside of a horse.
