Hi and thanks Chip!!, In the fall of 2019, 30 Veterans from Oregon was honored to 4 days of touring. Our country gave us recognition of the sacrifice we endured. Most of us served in Vietnam. In 1975 we did not get a welcome home, but in my mind I just knew our great Nation would not forget forever. Our trip was titled, "Journey of Heroes". Oh! there's more, our return to PDX was lead by an 8 piece Scottish Bagpipe group, and as we rolled slowly by, People were Cheering, Waving flags, Running up to us, Shaking hands, and Thanking Us for our service. This celebration destroyed any negative feelings we may have harbored for 44 years. Speaking of letting go of negative feeling, I enlisted into the Army because I, dearly, wanted to trained to be a Combat Army Medic . After passing the aptitude test, I was placed on the list of candidates to attend the school at Ft Sam Houston in San Antonio. After basic I was told, in a letter and clarified, the maximum number for the coming 12 weeks was reached. So, in the meanwhile I was offered training in the quarter master supply and a promotion. Later an evaluator said the school is not ready to accept a colored soldier to be a Combat Medic . This was 1958, I did not complain, fear being kicked out or worse. No, I don't have bad feelings about not getting why I enlisted, any more.
