I almost feel like Kingsolver never read Hillbilly Elegy. Vance goes into how economic shifts have effected the area. From factory closures, to declining coal production to a more international economy etc. Vance quotes statistics, studies and gets a little preaching at times. It is Vance’s story and observations from his life. Vance’s grandparents love and commitment to him are what helped him a lot. The Marine Corps taught him the self discipline that made his college career a success. My son’s wife’s family are from Tennessee. The family has deep roots going back generations. They identify with what is Vance writes about. I remember when Hillary and Biden had a war on coal. They decided these people could learn coding, give me a break, isn’t that just as stereotypical?
