Being married (51 years) to a Navajo lady, I am happy to see more recognition of our indigenous peoples.

MSG Stan Hutchison Long overdue. I take it personally also, having relative, friends, and somewhat dilute indigenous ancestry (from gx2grands). I am still angry that earlier generations wanted to "hide" that ancestry from later generations - though with attitudes that prevailed (and treaties not honored, not to mention the long walks, residential schools, toxic industries on tribal land . . . .) it is understandable from the perspective of earlier family to be "protection".<sigh>
(congratulations - my folks made it past 50 years also and siblings past the 25 year mark)

Maj (Join to see) - I am also "white as white can be" being predominately Swedish and Scottish. But my wife is 100% Navajo, born and raised on the reservation except for 4 years in an Oklahoma Indian School, where she spent her summers at home, but school sessions there.
Living in South Dakota for over 0 years and now in Arizona I see the face of racism every day.

MSG Stan Hutchison - And the people who feel superior because of their skin color are usually the ones who most definitely aren't superior at anything.

I like seeing him removed from the holiday as I like seeing Robert E Lee being removed from holidays here in the south. He represents an oversimplification of history that has been taught in schools for years. We worry that American kids are falling behind the rest of the world academically, but never consider that it could be because we've dumbed down everything we teach to the point of being absurdly simplistic or even false. It's hard to bite on the "he did awful things" narrative, because everyone did awful things back then - by today's standards. But raising him up on a pedestal for "discovering" somewhere that was already known to many is something we need to correct.
