Some are asking why make a point of these athletes being gay.
This person summed it up;
Another replied: "It matters to people legitimately afraid of losing jobs or getting abused if they are open about being gay. When someone can reach the top of their field without hiding, that gives hope."
I hope the day comes when we no longer have that "divide" between us, be it race, sexual preference, gender, age, or whatever. Until that day, I see it as important to have those issues out in the open.

While I can appreciate the sentiment, their sexuality has absolutely nothing with what they are doing. We can apply this same level of adversity for a great many things. Would it be a topic of discussion if the skater was color-blind? Not if it made no impact on their ability to perform. Now, if a skater was blind, that would be a big deal. Hillary said it best, "A the end of the day, what difference does it make?" The Olympics is supposed to be about athletic ability, not personality or what they do in their private life outside of their sport. Politics and social causes are not part of the equation.
