I had a good friend (he passed many years ago) who had been a talk show host on WNBC New York and we talked about Carson and his competition. I wondered why he was so popular while really smart people like Dick Cavett failed to dislodge Carson from the number one spot. His opinion was that people didn't want intellectual at that time of night. We were tired. We already had enough of the details of work and family, the bad news of the day and such, and just wanted light entertainment before we went to bed. (Sort of like the dentist suggesting that you think of Mickey Mouse before giving you gas to put you to sleep) I think he was correct. Now, I wonder what my friend would think of today's "entertainment". Colbert isn't funny except to those who share his anger and ideology. His audience laughs at such insults while others fuss and fume over the insult. This goes hand-in-hand with my complaint that comics are no longer funny. They don't make me laugh, not like Li'l Abner and Snuffy Smith, Donald Duck and Bugs Bunny, Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin (who can still entertain me). The bottom line is that Colbert doesn't bother me half as much as his audience does.

First I doubt Colbert is one tenth as intelligent as Carson. You do not have to be smart to come up with the filth Colbert comes up with. But to do what Carson did, and allot of it off the cuff at times, you have to be smart and witty. I used to watch Carson, there has not been another late talk show host that sparks my interest enough to stay up.

Me neither. And I'm not sure it had anything to do with intelligence. Maybe it did. Then again, maybe it was his personality. He was very, very generous. He used his show as a launching pad for many careers. When he saw an entertainer worthy of a break, he gave it to them. BTW, I think he leaned that habit from his predecessor, Steve Allen (the only late night host I liked better than Carson and he really was intelligent/talented. Look up his accomplishments some time)

Colbert is feeding the beast for ratings. His audience can be whipped into a froth with a few insulting, obscene lines and, of course, he will be a hero to the media on the left. It is a win, win for him with no downside.
Carson, Cavett and others did not need to insult others to entertain. There is nothing wrong with poking fun at someone here and there. The hatred and venom for some is on full display and it is not about comedy it is about trying to destroy someone you politically disagree with.

Then don't watch it in the same way some many choose not to watch the cable and internet shows that tries to be funny with the occasional insults of Liberal politicians. I laughed when Colbert also made fun of a few Democrats to include Clinton when the situation called for it. Everyone has their opinion, just sharing mine.

CPT Jack Durish - Note I said "encouraged" and not directed. It's no coincidence that the FCC and other legal folks have been going after individuals that publicly mock Trump through various mediums. First article highlights how much the FCC chairman supports Trumps views. Second article highlights to act on the several complaints the FCC received. I'm making the assumption that the FCC chair is finding his motivation somewhere since previous FCC chairmen had thicker skin.

MAJ James Woods - The complaints have been coming from many, many viewers which is normally how these things begin. Trump hasn't had to do a thing. Also, there is as yet no evidence whatsoever that these complaints are being handled any differently than others. During the Obama Administration, the thick thinned folks in Washington did their damnedest to get talk radio shut down inasmuch as that medium was largely critical of President Obama. (...and I never heard of gross insults directed at President Obama such as the one voiced by Colbert)

CPT Jack Durish - Many complaints from...ding, ding, ding...conservatives and Trump supporters and an CFC chair who loves Trump; you're right, Trump doesn't have to directly do a thing, his indirect influence is more than enough. But since FCC now saying as of today there isn't much of a case nor wrong doing by Colbert we can all move on with more jokes ahead.
