Maj Marty Hogan Always enjoy your Rev War posts, but this one hits right at home. Not only am I an SAR member, but I belong to the Vermont Society SAR and have lived in Vermont since retiring in 1990. Between Ethan Allen and Seth Warner (Green Mountain Boys), I doubt Vermont would exist!

CDR Dan Cunningham - Do you use buckets in your sugar operation? My evap is a leader 2 1/2 X8 oil fired arch with a steam away, and I can turn 100 gallons of sap into sugar an hour. Depending on the year, we can make about 200 gallons of syrup. I don't like the states new grading system, nor do my customers. Everything is Grade A now, even the old Grade B and the the old Grade C ! Everybody gets a trophy syndrome? We built the sugar house with Hemlock sawed timbers and siding 11 years ago when we last logged the property. We built it as a timber frame with the oak wood pins and all. Just like our old house!. The only thing I had to buy for the sugar house was the metal roofing and the cement slab. We have 700 buckets we put up, but this year I am going to pipeline my bush. At 70 years old, I just can't do the buckets any more. I do have one section near our road that I can't pipe line that will take about 70 buckets, so my customers will still see some buckets every spring, they do like to see the buckets.

CWO3 Dennis M. - The first year we used buckets, but we get a lot of snow, it's steep and I got tired of wearing so many gallons of sap, so we put in a pipeline. I haven't met anybody that likes the new grading system. It always amazes me the number of people who make everywhere from 5 gallons to a few hundred every year; it's a lot of work and most people think it's easy. As we're in Franklin County, we visit the larger producers during Open House weekend to see the newest technology - it's really amazing.

CDR Dan Cunningham - I used to go to the Leader open House in Swanton every year with my neighbor Steve Rogers....but my wife took away my liberty card.....Seems I always came home with a few new items every year! By the way, Steve is a huge sugar maker, he has over 15,000 taps and makes well over 3000 gallons of syrup every year, He only cans it in 45 gallon stainless Steel drums and sells it all in bulk. My wife says he is a bad influence on me???

CWO3 Dennis M. - I've been to Leader quite a bit, but they are pricey. Don't know if you know about MapleTrader, but I've found a lot of good info on that website about every aspect of sugaring.

Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that January 21 is the anniversary of the birth of farmer, businessman, land speculator, philosopher, writer, lay theologian, and American Revolutionary War patriot, and politician Ethan Allen who led the Green Mountain Boys in the Revolutionary War.
His challenge to the British Captain in command of Fort Ticonderoga "In the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress!" demonstrated his faith in God and that he was a patriot.[
Ironically now when most people hear or see Ethan Allen they think furniture
Rest in eternal peace Ethan Allen.

Dave Barton from wallbuilders.com tells the story of Ethan Allen.
