This is the story line in often referenced 2015 novel "Ghost Fleet" in which China destroys US communications satellites in opening act of a Pacific war. No mention of military members actually being in space, there has long unsubstantiated talk of a "Military Space Shuttle". Have not heard a good reason why space defense can not continue to be run from existing "Space Command"

Good share. No the Space Force isn't a bunch of guys like astronauts but fighting in space (how would they even get there?). It's the ones we already have--mostly smart technical/cyber people, AF & contractors, who work this mission already. It's simply acknowledging a new direction, emphasis and reorganization. I'm not sure the general public understands this from the media hype. Nor do I think our POTUS does either. Mattis does.
