I am a school teacher with over twenty years experience with a Master's degree. I make just over 62,000 including healthcare benefits of which I pay the majority. With a rank of Major, given my experience and education, I would be be making close to 96,000. If I were to use an enlisted rank of say E -8 (Master Sergeant), I would still be making about 65000, not counting other benefits such as health and housing. Yes, the military does compare favorably to some civilian occupations, especially teaching.

My wife is a 4th grade teacher. Teachers are grossly underpaid for the time they spend on the job. All the teaching requirements are ridiculous. A person couldn't accomplish all the requirements with a 100 hour work week. Rant complete.

Pay is a lot better now than when I was in. As an E-2 I received $110 per month

When I was an E1 in basic training I think I got $320 per pay check and that was in 2000.
