I took the high road during my divorce, but she did not. 20 years ago I gave my ex $2000/month. She filed bankruptcy and I got stuck with the joint debt. House $110,000. Van $8,000. Credit card $5,000. I was financially overwhelmed. It took me years to build up my credit rating. The lesson I learned is your actions can be pure, but you might still get f@cked. I am no longer mad at her because she killed her liver by excessive drinking. In retrospect, I regret ever meeting her.

Sorry for your experience. News story goes to show that divorce not only affects people emotionally, but also financially. One must be careful about how to untangle joint assets from a former spouse.
