Digging Up The Trenches (WWI Documentary)

I really felt like a pussy when I dug holes to plant some herbs to include basil and cilantro. The ground was really hard and clay like. It kicked my ass, and it made me think how horrific it would be to dig a fighting position at my location. I am making the strong assumption if digging holes for basil kicks my ass, I am not army material.

What is interesting is from the Civil War to WWI the predominant military problem was the range of weapons far exceeding the ability to maneuver. This perplexed commanders in regards to finding solutions. Some commanders theorized that units on the attack should be sufficiently dense in order to have requisite numbers to conduct a successful attack. Some tried to attack in tight column formations with disastrous results, as the defenders were able to mass their canons and small arms on the column. Eventually Nazi Germany found a solution to this military problem.
