Steaming music has become quite popular these days (Pandora, Spotify, Jango, Amazon Prime Music and even Youtube) since it simplifies the need for a music library or conversions and allows people to share playlists. However the mp3 format is not dead, it's just a file extension that you can still create/use when copying your own music. Music companies on the other hand, may choose not to support this file format and use something else like AAC or OGG. Additionally, file formats/extensions have always been a problem since Itunes doesn't use the mp3 format (by default) which meant people with mp3's had to convert their music in Itunes just so they can listen to it on their Iphones or Ipods.
This is very similar to movie formats (mp4, mkv, mpeg, mpg, avi, etc) and how some computer or tablets can play them correctly. Otherwise you have to download a codec that supports it or download a universal player like VLC.
There is also the digital book formats that also causes problems too! Some use epub formats, some use the pdf format, and some companies like Amazon have their own format MOBI.
The bottom line is this, we need a universal format that works across all platforms/computer whether its for music, movies or ebooks. This whole proprietary software is just dumb and a huge frustration for a lot of IT technicians.

Thank you Sean for your in-depth explanation. I still container use the library to copy music and I have an MP3 player just like the one featured in this story and it works fine period even if you accidentally put in the washer to let it dry out it will come back to life. Like you said, MP3's are here to stay even with all the newer technology.
