In Iraq we burned trash and Human Waste at times in our the 2003-2004 deployment. It sucked, stunk and was pretty bad.
On our second deployment, 2005-2006, our PT track took us for a nice long jog around the giant burn pit we had. The Company actually held a PT Test around the Pit and of course had a very high number of PT failures. We were all punished for not passing with mandatory 2 a day PT sessions for 3 months. They redid our PT test on a different route. Everyone passed....
Conclusion = Mandatory 2 a days PT sessions are an awesome solution....

I can speak to this one by experience. In Afghanistan "we" do not use the burn pits, but rather, the Afghans do. Despite the fact we purchased several waste facilities for them, they refuse to maintain them, allow them to fail, and they go back to the burn pits. I have copies of the environmental reports tucked away in case I ever start showing repertory problems in the future which can be attributed to these.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin, SGT Cody Skinner, In Vietnam, we used aviation fuel when we burned poop in the poop barrels. You had to keep stirring the poop until is was completely burned into a stinking ash like substance and then put the barrels on a Mule and haul the stuff off. If I would have been smart back then, I too would have kept records of when I was on that detail. Fortunately we were in the field more than at our base camp. After I made SGT, I had the unpleasant task of putting my buds on poop burning detail.,I didn't feel one bit guilty since I had done my share of it.

I did this as a doc with my marines. Afghans used it as a poop house (it was somewhere around 600 Sq ft with 4 walls) and we also burned batteries and bloody uniforms to keep the ANCOP from taking them. Bad stuff for ones health
