I wrote a military essay about this. It went exactly as the video went. The convoys essentially did not monitor or protect the rear. The sailors had to determine that the U-Boats were inside the convoy, then they wargamed how they snuck in. They concluded the only way was from the rear.
In wars we make assumptions that we think are facts. For example, British and US Air Forces assumed bombers did not have to be escorted. I believe all together 12,000 bombers were shot down over Europe. It was assumed that convoys did not need rear security much to the detriment of many sunk ships in the Atlantic.
