SN Greg Wright - At the CO's discretion (and then I would suspect with permission from his/hers COC), after 45 straight days at sea, the ship can be authorized a beer day. All, of age, Sailors can be authorized 2 beers (usually in conjunction with a "steel beach" picnic). In my entire 9 years at sea, it only happened once. In 1998, in support of DESERT FOX, onboard the USS ESSEX, we had been at sea for 61 days, and at the 46 day mark we were had a beer day. That same deployment we had a 48 day at sea period, but since we were scheduled for port visit the CO concluded a beer day was not necessary.
The day of the picnic, the entire MAA force monitored the activities. The beer had to be consumed in one area of the flight deck. You were given your 2 beers and both were opened before you got them. Once you were finished you had to depart the "drinking area", and you could only participate if you were not scheduled for watch within 8 hours. At least they were cold...

Got sent over to a German ship once for a briefing. Before i left, my CO told me that I was not allowed to drink over there. I was confused as I was young and had never been on a foreign ship before.... got onboard, they had beer machines like we have soda machines, they served wine at dinner, and I could have none....
