So he's in a group that on average can't meet the requirements, but he was given the opportunity to demonstrate that he is not average, and can, in fact, meet all the physical requirements of the job. It didn't matter that probably a small percentage of amputees could do what he did. He was given the opportunity to succeed or fail based on his personal capabilities and wasn't held back because of the statistics of his group as a whole. His hard work, determination and preparation determined whether he made it or not. And he made it despite the doubters.
Yet we have thread after thread and article after article posted about why women can't hack it in combat because on average they are weaker than men. But no one has suggested the average women be forced into the infantry, or those women who can't make the standards be allowed to stay. Rather, the policy simply mirrors the same principles as this cadets story. Women will be given the opportunity to show the can meet the standard. And if they demonstrate they can do the job, then they can do the job.
