President Duterte of the Philippines set a bad precedence by rolling over like a roach in regards to China's imperial design of the S China Sea. He welcomed the Chinese like brothers.

I learned early in my career to test my limits. It’s amazing what one or a country can accomplished by ignoring the chattering class and act. Once a policy or action is in place, it’s far more likely its permanent.

"... allying with the Russians against the PRC..."
You forget that Russia and China have been reconciling their relationship. Unlike Nixon who leveraged China against Russia during their Cold War rift, Trump's temper and policies have helped them team up against the West.

China says relations with Russia at 'best level in history'
China and Russia are publicly heralding a new age of diplomacy between the two countries, at a time when both are being targeted by the United States with punitive measures.

Sir, I understand the point you are trying to make. Nevertheless, I am reasonably certain that you do not truly believe everything the RR and the PRC state for public consumption.
Russians (whether in a communist or a conventional dictatorship) are still Russians. They haven't wavered in their determination or methods for at least 200 years. Doggedness could describe just about everything they do. They will say anything and do anything to advance what they consider to be in their national interest. Right now they are the PRC's bosom buddy. I believe that this is mostly a function of the fact that we still scare them sh_tless (irrespective of their bluster).
However if something they wanted really badly was in both of our best interest and they were as certain as possible we wouldn't screw them over, they would be all in in a New York Minute. Not because they are the good guys, but because they are really BAD guys. They always act in complete unenlightened self-interest. This makes them consistent and consistency is good! If you don't believe me, just look at their performance at the end of WWII and throughout the Cold War. There is however one caveat; we MUST follow through with our promises while intimidating them to the extent that they wouldn't dream of not doing what we expect. All of this is easier than it sounds as long as you have some finesse. Secretary of State Pompeo has finesse.
