On May 6, 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed into law by Chester A. Arthur. It was an appeal to the overt racism of workers in California.
"The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was the first significant law restricting immigration into the United States. Many Americans on the West Coast attributed declining wages and economic ills to Chinese workers. Although the Chinese composed only .002 percent of the nation's population, Congress passed the exclusion act to placate worker demands and assuage prevalent concerns about maintaining white 'racial purity.'"

The subject of immigration comes up and people assume they are talked about Mexicans or Central Americans. Where I lived in San Francisco, the massive majority were Chinese and almost all had family that came in through one fraud or other illegal means because of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Many witnessed the Japanese being carted off, never to return. The last thing they want is to have immigration around. It has nothing to do with Latinos
