Fatal traffic crashes are up in Washington state, and they are hitting especially hard among Native American communities, according to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
“The fatality rates are so much higher than any other race within our state,” Washington Traffic Safety Commission tribal liaison Penny Rarick told a June 3 meeting of the Washington House Transportation Committee.

Much of the drinking and drug use involved can be related to generational trauma, as with all Native communities.

My native wife has lost friends and relatives to drunks while walking on roads or while driving a vehicle to other drunk drivers.

LVMPD also reported making 1,756 DUI arrests this year compared to 1,882 during the same time period in 2023. That is a nearly 7 percent decrease.
However, DUI arrests from 2019 to 2022 steadily increased from 5,098 to 5,946. End-of-year data for 2023 shows 5,649 DUI arrests but that number is expected to change as LVMPD receives the results from tests taken in 2023 that were not added to the statistics due to the results not being available by the end of the year, according to a department spokesperson.
