Thank you for the touching story, I have a sister in law that is in remission right now, lost an aunt and great grandmother to different forms of cancer.

My paternal grandmother died from colon cancer, my dad got diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013 but, because he was getting a colonoscopy every year, they caught it in enough time to remove the cancer and he's fine. He started to go in after my grandma died (his mom). My maternal grandmother died from uterine (?) cancer after 7 years of it. Before I was born so I never met her. My maternal grandfather died in Aug 2016 from kidney cancer. They removed that kidney but his other one failed and over that last year of his life he just deteriorated slowly. By the time he died he couldn't do anything by himself. My grandma (technically stepgrandma but only grandma I knew) had a hard time the first few months but she keeps busy. She's 10 years younger than him too. They were both pretty active until he got that cancer. He loved to go fishing. They traveled all over the US.

Then below I wrote about my daughter and her kidney issues. Hers was genetic - rare because both parents have to have the gene to pass it on. I never heard of it before her. He has 3 other kids with 2 other women and they are fine. So it was us. But she's 15 months post transplant and doing great.

My daughter has scars from her transplant surgery, her dialysis catheter and when her kidneys were removed - as well as where she had a port and her central lines inserted. I hope that she stands up for herself someday if she's ever bullied over them. I know at some point when she's in sports or other events and has to change around other girls there is always that one asshole in the group who thinks she's better than everyone else. I hope she has learned some sarcasm at least. Or fights with kindness - one or the other.

I hope that if I have the opportunity I can educate other parents or she can educate other kids about what she's been through and help other kids like her.

SFC (Anonymous): She will learn how to deal with it rather quickly. I had friends who had to deal with their scars, then I learned to deal with mine.
The public doesn't know how to deal with people with disabilities. We scare the hell out of them because they realize how quickly it could be them. Please remember to keep your mouth shut when someone says something about your daughter's disability to her. It's her story, not your story. It's her place, not your place, to respond or not to respond. It took my husband a couple of years to figure that out. Now, he just keeps his mouth shut and tries to find a place to laugh really hard (and loud) when I get those stupid comments, stares, etc.
