It sounds as though Boris got himself type casted in the Screen Actor's Guild.

Yep, pretty much; but he performed on stage, screen and television. Neat episode on the show Route 66 where Boris, Peter Lorrie and Lon Chaney show up as themselves. All of them were beyond their best years and the episode was very tongue and cheek but fun to watch.

Mr. Karloff suffered great physical injury during the filming of Frankenstein. The director Whale after a dispute during filming made Boris carry Colin Clive uphill ( in the finale scene filmed that day)over and over again just to be spiteful. Karloff was not provided with a dummy and he did take after take till the shooting stopped at 5:00AM. Mr. Kaloff started the day at 3:30AM sitting for his makeup to be applied. Mr. Karloff had spent over 25 hours in full monster regalia. From the book Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff by Gregory William Mank.
