Maj John Bell
MAJ Ken Landgren - No, that is not the real question. Do you honestly believe that everyone in a leadership position must be a subject matter expert? Do you believe that he may have consulted with the subject matter experts who let him know there are problems with Electro-Magnetic Aircraft Launch (EMAL) launch systems. (And there are serious problems with EMAL.) Steam catapults are a proven technology, less expensive, by a long shot, and reliable; everything EMAL systems are not.
But if you don't know the difference between a discussion siege craft and aircraft carrier systems...

As a Chief Engineer on a brand new DDG, I will give you my 2 cents...
Big Navy (Pentagon and shipbuilders) want the next gen stuff now, like the electromagnetic catapult. Real Navy (the ones on the shiny tip of the spear), want something that works reliably.
This is the second electromagnetic system that has fallen way behind operational requirements, while simultaneously massively increasing the price. the other was the rail gun. That program was scrapped for now, pending some massive rework.
I have a very bad history with contractors trying to bring new stuff on ships before they are ready. So, I am biased. These contractors see a shiny requirement, design a half-a@@ed piece of equipment, and then foist it on the ship, and tell us to work all the kinks out. Not fair for the sailors who should have only the equipment that is already tested and reliable to worry about at sea.
So, President Trump being the businessman that he is is taking that same if it doesn't work, stop paying for it approach. Good for him, and good for the sailors!

I sincerely apologize for snickering. Alexander the Great was crossing a wide river on rafts while the Afghans were laughing at him on the other side of the river. Alexander's men uncovered the catapults on the rafts and fired on the silly men who decided showing assholes and elbows was better than being hit by huge rocks. That is genius. Trump is a genius. All is good in this world as the POTUS gives us guidance on how to prepare for future wars.
