If I could have smuggled the Vietnamese street vendor in downtown Bien Hoa early 1968 I would have. The banh mi sandwich he made was the most delicious food I ever had there. The bread was indescribable and the mix of meat (you never asked what it was), plus the vegetables and peppers. I was only able to get them just a few times since our brigade base was right outside the city. After a month or so of C rats the sandwiches were heaven anytime I had occasion to return to the base.

I have not found an equivalent in the U.S. and have tried a few Vietnamese restaurants. I think the flavor difference was in the bread, not the filling.
Still looking.

Sounds awesome my friend!
I miss the Schwenkbraten (marinated pork sandwich) for Bitburg Germany.
