The Greeks employed this tactic repeatedly, where they would feign retreat in order to draw the Persian cavalry into pursuit (and away from direction to be employed elsewhere) and getting the Persian infantry to march forward from their prepared positions. Once in the open, the heavy phalanx would make short work of Persian formations, cutting right through them. Disorganized, they would retreat in order to form back up and get ravaged from the rear.
You'd think eventually the Persians would figure out an effective counter, but they never did. They kept trying to best the hoplites in the field.
