In the 1940's, lobotomies and electroshock therapies were considered the "in" treatment for dozens of mental and physical disabilities. Now they are largely barbaric practices. It is a disservice to look at older science with a modern viewpoint.

I visited the Holocaust Museum in DC a few years ago while accompanying my son's Middle School field trip to DC. One section of the museum told the story of the disabled during the war. I won't describe it here, but my son, being disabled and having a few challenges himself, well, this museum helped place a lot of things into perspective for me. My wife had a hard time in that museum, especially when it came to the section about disabled children and what the Nazi's did to them. And to think "Asperger's Syndrome" is a title that a lot of people don't realize the genesis of it.
