Hal 9000 VS Dave - Ontological scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey
Dave: Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL? HAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you. Dave: Open the pod bay doors, HAL. HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do tha...

It's funny you bring this up. I'm familiar with Dr. Hawking's feelings on the matter of AI weapons. I was also just reading on Facebook (so I took that with a grain of salt) that they, Facebook, is planning on launching Internet "drones" to provide free Internet access to the world.
I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist, so these types of talks remind me of Skynet from The Terminator and HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwBmPiOmEGQ
In all seriousness though, the people who are developing this type of technology (who are much smarter than I can ever hope to be) should keep ethics in mind at all times. I think maybe they should use LCDR Data from Star Trek: TNG as their role model!

It is coming. the only question at this point is will it be made intentionally or will it be made as a oops.. They have been playing with Virtual intelligence for years. This is not a true intelligence, it is like the Google search bar or IBM's Watson. At least if we pursue it we will have a chance to direct it.

Wouldn't it be nice to have some intelligence making decisions? Hell, if they work it out, maybe we should let them vote...
