Award and funeral, I vote yes. Takes the spot light away from that turd and instead shows that as a country we award those who do the right thing. His story is a blue print on the army values.

Of course there is. Actually, when the story was first posted to RP about the cadets, I had stated that they better be awarded this award. I'm glad that it went through and so quickly too.

Well the headline makes it seem like (to me anyway) that the Army was going to give them something like the Bronze Star.

No, each JROTC branch falls under their own command and have their own awards that come along with them. For AFJROTC cadets, what I was, we had three different awards that dealt with heroism; the Gold Award, the Silver Award, and the Humanitarian Award. AJROTC has the Heroism Medal and I believe a 2nd tier award that is similar to the Silver Award. They aren't actually in the military and they weren't involved in combat; they would never be authorized the Bronze star, just can't happen. There are DoD civilian awards that could be awarded here but they demonstrate the same criteria as the AJROTC Heroism Medal. This isn't anything that is to be taken lightly though. The AJROTC Heroism Medal stands for exactly what it sounds like, heroism, plain and simple. An award that could best be thought of to be similar to this for Active duty would be the Soldier's Medal or the Navy/Marine Corps Heroism Medal.

SN Greg Wright - IAW AR 145-2 and CCR 672-5-1 the ROTC Medal for Heroism is equivalent to the Soldier's Medal as SGT Gunderson stated.
