If you listen to Trump, Trump wants tariff’s targeted and for a limited time. If you target it at a critical economic time in a country it gets their attention. The fact that Biden is expanding Trump’s tariffs is telling, they work.

The "economist" and "businessmen" that are against tariffs use the "Great Depression" as an excuse to not impose tariffs. There was a lot of reasons for that collapse, if tariffs didn't work, why did all out recent trading partners, from Japan and Germany to China, impose them?
Reagan's "Voluntary Export Retraint" produced more high paying industrial jobs than any other legislation I know. The threat of a real tariff cause the Japanese first, then followed by the Koreans, to move Manufacturing onshore since Auto's produced here were not part of the quota. The VER has produced 170,000 auto industry jobs in the US, most in the South, and no telling how much of an economic impact to an area.
