Is this wrong, or is it time to change? Is this just a political move before the innoguration? Have our military forces suffered these past 200 years without beards and dreadlocks?

Bad idea. You can't half open the door on items like this because it impacts discpline directly, either the door is wide open or it is all the way closed. Furthermore the exceptions they are granting are for tiny religious minorities of less than 1% while rejecting exceptions for religious majorities serving (example: wearing a cruicifix under the uniform is still banned as the wearing of "jewelry"). It's not going to work and the Army will eventually have to either reverse itself here or open the door all the way to wearing of religious articles by everyone and not just a chosen few.

CW4 Guy Butler - The problem with that AR as usual is in the interpretation, the chain of the crucifix is visible on the back of the neck #1, #2 the Cross of the Cruicifix can be deemed a hazzard to the Soldier to wear during Combat drills.......both leading to the prohibition of wear. Only exception I have sometimes seen...get by when I was in uniform was oval medals hung from the dog tag chain which could be considered interfering with special equipment but usually overlooked because they are not visible unless a specific dog tag inspection is done. Psst, notice the other Infantryman that read the post agreed. It's the difference between being in a support unit vs an Infantry unit........again. Also, another small exception is Airborne units allow the wear of the St. Micheal medal in most cases because he is the patron saint of paratroopers and obviously that is due to the tie in with Airborne Espirit De Corps but good luck getting by with wearing a crucifix.

SPC Erich Guenther - that's the one I wear; designed for Soldiers in WWI. Never had a problem wearing it.

Grooming standards change. Typically military grooming standards closely resembled the business standards of the day, but post-Vietnam (All Volunteer), military standards have become more and more detached from he real world.
If we can trust commanders to execute operational grooming standards when required, we can work through this.
