Kind of hard to deploy air controllers into a site that requires someone to jump from something and swim in unobserved if you aren't dive trained. But you have to understand that the Air Force doesn't comprehend diving. During Vietnam I'd often have to skirt or even stretch regulations concerning diving and flying.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen true, but they definitely serve a purpose. Way, way back when I was at Shaw. We had a CCT there along with the Cessna push me-pull you forward observation aircraft.

Maj Robert Thornton Those push me-pull you forward folks directed a lot of B-52 strikes.

But they just looked hilarious Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen. One of my friends got to ride as a passenger, he said the pullout on a rocket run was insane. LOL.

Maj Robert Thornton One of my flight school classmates got assigned to one, but we never kept in touch.

In his memo asking to remove dive school from the training, Bauernfeind said students will continue to attend the Pre-Dive course.
While dive school might be a right of passage for CCTs, the Army has long taken a different approach. Army special operators who attend dive school in Key West, Florida — mostly Special Forces and Rangers — do so as a mid-career pit stop, and usually only if they are already top performers. Completing the course might qualify a soldier for assignment to a dive team in their home unit, but many special operators never go. Maj Robert Thornton so they will start with the pre dive qualification and then might handpick those moving on for moser extensive training,

I respectfully disagree Maj Kim Patterson. Combat Controllers like the PJ’s are the elite. They need to be able to deploy anytime and anywhere. That is the reason they go through dive school. It’s not just a rite of passage but a skill set that may well be necessary, IMHO.
