An addiction is a misguided attempt to create a moment.
Most of them start with a positive experience. If it did not start as a good time, then why would we want to do it over and over again to the point we form a habit and eventual addiction?
The vice we use, be it drugs, sex, alchohol, gambling, over eating, gaming is just the vehicle we are using to escape from ourselves in an attempt to bring us back to that moment.
Thinking about the first time a person uses a drug that they later become addicted to, their first expereince may have given them amazing feeling that replaced a shitting feeling within so they find themselves wanting to return to that place again.
The vibration of the substance or activity gives us a fleeting moment of peace from how we feel within ourselves. It does this the same way air freshener removes the funky smell from the bathroom.
If the source of the stench is not flushed down the drain, the air freshener will wear off and the funk eventually will take over.
The same is true with addiction. The moment of peace, bliss, excitement or ecstasy it gives us is always short lived. When we crash, we crash hard and find ourselves back in the funk of the low vibrations we wanted to escape from so we end up wanting to go right back, time and time again.
We want to go back to our moment because we are on a quest to escape ourselves; our vice is simply our vehicle.
So only focusing on the vice and not addressing the driving emotional factors of mind behind it will not really work long term because our habits tend to win over our will power if they are based on a negative energy within us.
The best way to conquer an addiction is to identify the driving force behind it and face that head on. When we crash from a high, we find ourselves at a new low. This is because all the negative feelings we wanted to escape from are always waiting for us when the party is over.
Addressing the negative feelings that drive us to want to escape ourselves is the only real way forward. Just as pulling weeds from our garden on a hot day is not an enjoyable task, pulling the weeds from our internal garden of repressed emotions might be uncomfortable and difficult.
However, once the daunting task is done, we will have a clean slate and create new space for far better things to grow within our lives.
