History is quite clear as to the hatred of Lincoln by people of the south. I had a grandfather that used to celebrate the date of Lincoln's assassination.

Noting suggests that the people who did that are the anti confederacy group. In fact, notice how the Writer said this was another example in the "civil war monument debate" nationwide. Clever but inaccurate and misleading change. The nationwide debate has not been about civil war monuments collectively. It has been specifically about proconfederacy monuments. He changes the term to civil war because he knows it makes no sense to say an anticonfedracy person would damage a Lincoln statue.
And since there is no evidence given as to who did it, wouldn't the odds be on someone who hates what Lincoln fought for rather than someone who hates what Lee stood for?
