It was complete chaos because fighting was not expected in that area in Belgium. I would characterize many soldiers as light infantry because they had no vehicles and no pronounced weapons systems. They had to fight a significantly large and mechanized German force. The weather was bitterly cold and ran out of food, supplies, ammunition, and any semblance of organization.
The 101st was located at Bastogne and were surrounded, but they would eventually prevail because the division was elite. They trained hard and fought hard to prepare for the war.
