Smokers used to be, as I recall, big deals. I remember reading about Doris Miller, a black mess mate who was the The West Virginia heavy weight boxing Champ. During the attack on Pearl Harbor Miller worked to move wounded Sailors to safety and, even untrained, manned a 50 cal antiaircraft gun shooting down between 4 to 7 Japanese aircraft. He was the first Black Sailor to win the navy cross. I met a fellow a Church who boxed in the army. He had boxed golden gloves and did quite well. In basic there was a sadistic Sargent who liked to beat up newly enlisted soldiers setting them up for a brutal beating. My Church friend got selected. My church friend had recently had an appendectomy. The Sargent soon figured out his set up knew how to box. The Sargent started going for my friends newly healed incision. Being well versed in even ugly aspects like f boxing my friend would rake the Sargent’s eyes with the strings of his gloves when the Sargent dove in for the scar. My friend got the Sargent with some good shots and the fight was called a draw. Great share.
