“Why Treaties: Old Crossing Treaty” from 2014 (nearly an hour) was on our local FNX PBS channel yesterday.
While it is about the Ojibwa in Minnesota, is covers much more and in doing so provides
history and specifics about treaties and legal status of tribal nations.(at ~13minutes).
Many details I had not known about treaties and their specific legal status: starting with the “Doctrine of Discovery”, colonies, then with states, eventually primarily federal government and tribal nation treaties.
Interesting comments about people living in the “wilderness” in colonial times - that it connoted “uncitied” people thus uncivilized - a concept of colonizers long before colonial times in this hemisphere.
