Haiti vs. Dominican Republic - Country Comparison

With Haiti so much in the news, a comparison between that Nation and the Country with whom it shares its only/common border is quite interesting and quite stark; i.e., a comparison
somewhat akin to that between the two Koreas. Any thoughts as to why?
