Solzhenitsyn is a brilliant man. While studying Russian at Tulane I had the great good fortune to hear him speak. Although a friend of the West, he was not afraid to offer us some well-deserved criticism for what he regarded as the lack of moral fiber in America. He was much more attuned to our founding fathers than to the current generations of Americans and challenged us to live up to the values of the nation we had inherited from our founders. Solzhenitsyn was also a man of physical courage and was decorated for leading his artillery unit out of a German fire pocket in which it had become ensnared. Quite a man, indeed.
