Goldwater was willing to use nuclear weapons freely. claiming military leader could use as they felt necessary, especially in Vietnam. That would have been a disaster for the world.

BTW, this was my first vote in a Presidential election. I have voted in every general election since, almost all by absentee ballot.

And the Democrat that won in 1964 escalated the Vietnam war that cost 58,000 war dead. We will never know if Goldwater would have been worse but for 58,000 Johnson certainly was bad for them.

By all accounts he was a military hawk so it's doubtful things would have been different. Good thought though.

Pretty much the entire 20th Century we had Democrats and Republican hawks and oddly enough, no one in the world wanted to fight with the hawks. Every major conflict in the 20th century had a democrat at the helm.
