Charles Darwin enjoys a near god-like status among scientists for his theory of evolution. But his ideas that animals are conscious in the same way humans are have long been shunned. Until now.

The paradigm in neuroscience is changing to whether or not they can perceive their environment. And can they make a choice. As both are forms of consciousness. So when you see a manta shrimp, selecting and rejecting different pebbles to garbage entrance, that’s choice. When you see a bacteria swim away from the light or towards the light, that is perceiving its environment and the choice. They figure if you can do those things you are conscious –
