One GOP Congressman continues to wear a combat infantry badge despite it being removed from his military records. It was mistakenly awarded when he deployed as a civil affairs officer.

A Pentagon spokesperson explained that the badge was rescinded due to Nehls serving as a civil affairs officer versus the role of an infantryman or Special Forces soldier.

There is no question that Nehls served overseas and engaged in combat, but military documents show he received one Bronze Star instead of two.

Do you have proof the badge was removed from his records?
The attached article states "purportedly removed.". As in this has not been verified.
It also quotes a retired 2-star in Congress saying he is working to verify. As in Congress doesn't know either.
It also shows that he has been reported to only have 1 bronze star, but he provided proof of having two.
So, yeah. Until someone brings the actual receipts, I'm not throwing any stones. And no one else should, either.

If he was in combat action that would produce a CIB, wouldn't it just mean they would switch it to a CAB instead?

CPT Lawrence Cable it depends. The criteria for the two are slightly different, and the interpretations of the language varied greatly depending on who was in Command at the approving authority level at the time.
Additionally, if the CIB *was* revoked, a separate award recommendation would have to be submitted and approved for the CAB. It is not just a conversion from on to the other. The award recommendation form can more or less be a copy/paste, and just change "CIB" to "CAB," but it would still need a brand new recommendation and approval.
Yes, it is HIGHLY likely that a CAB could be awarded in its place. But not guaranteed.

SFC Casey O'Mally - I understood the paperwork stuff, former S-1. If the guy was given a CIB instead of a CAB, that's paperwork error and no big deal.
