It has nothing (or very little) to do with his being a Muslim, it is all about how unpopular his policies are. London has actually managed to become worse than NYC for things like crime, "green" policies, police protecting protestors shutting down traffic. etc.
It didn't help that when people were complaining about skyrocketing violent crime in London he went on TV to say that London was a very safe city because he felt perfectly safe when he walked the streets. (Of course he didn't mention his entire squad of armed police bodyguards that accompany him everywhere)
