A good bit of this is based on Putin's strong religious beliefs. He regards himself as a modern-day hero-defender of the Orthodox Church. He is convinced of the decline and decay of the Western democracies, including the loss of physical fitness and moral fiber. This hearkens back to Russians' long-held belief that they have been defending the ungrateful West against the invasion of Mongols and other interlopers from inferior Asian cultures. Read some Pushkin, Russia's national poet, to get an idea of how they feel.

MAJ Hugh Blanchard
MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D. - I was a Russian specialist in Army MI, as an enlisted soldier, an NCO and an officer. I speak Russian and have a degree in Russian Language and History, and I completed the year-long course at DLI-Monterey. I understand Russia and the Russians pretty well. But I and my colleagues were told that our services were not required since we and the Russians had become such good friends. Many of us knew better, but the powers that be were determined in their mistaken beliefs.
